Virginia Housing Associates Give Back Through Community Service

March 13, 2026

Here at Virginia Housing, we build up communities in ways you might expect, like providing mortgages to first-time homebuyers, financing rental developments and granting funds for innovation and revitalization efforts. We also do it in one way you might not: by volunteering.

Last year, Virginia Housing associates dedicated over 650 hours of volunteer service to a wide range of organizations and activities. Associates helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity, taught financial literacy to high school students, picked up litter, cleared out invasive plant species in local parks, served in local food banks and more.

“We like to say that Virginia Housing invests in the power of home,” said Virginia Housing Chief Operations Officer Janet Wiglesworth. “One way that a house becomes a home is when its residents are part of a strong community. Beyond the work we do every day, we’re proud to invest time into efforts that support Virginians in all kinds of ways.”

In total, Virginia Housing’s internal volunteer council led 19 initiatives in 2025, giving our associates a wide range of opportunities to make a difference.

“Volunteering through Virginia Housing is meaningful to me because I feel like we make an impact as a team,” said Liz Wells, an associate who co-chairs the volunteer council. “Knowing I’m helping others also helps improve my mental and emotional well-being, and I love that Virginia Housing makes volunteering a priority.”
