Virginia Housing Military Program

At Virginia Housing, we're grateful for all the sacrifices that members of the military community have made for our country. We work hard to honor these individuals – including veterans and retired military as well as active duty and military spouses – by providing opportunities and support that fit their skills and needs. Our efforts include:

Resources for Managers

We provide our managers with resources that help them understand the unique capabilities that those with military experience bring to the table, emphasizing how experience gained while serving can translate to success in a civilian career.

Onboarding Buddy Program

We pair newly hired employees who have military backgrounds with more experienced employees who have similar backgrounds, giving new hires a direct line to someone whose career path has included a similar transition.

Military Leave Policy

We offer a military leave policy that grants a leave of absence to employees who are away from work because they are serving, including service in the Virginia National Guard, the Virginia State Defense Force or naval militia called to state active duty.

Virginia Housing IDEA Council Military Subcommittee

Our military program is supported by Virginia Housing’s IDEA Council (inclusion, diversity, equity and access). IDEA is a core value at Virginia Housing, and the IDEA Council is instrumental in driving our mission forward. The IDEA Council’s Military Associates Subcommittee supports the IDEA Council by spearheading initiatives that foster a culture of support, growth and awareness so that all associates feel a true sense of belonging.

V3 Badge - Virginia Values Veterans

We’re proud to be a Virginia Values Veterans (V3)-certified employer, meaning we understand what members of the military community bring to our mission.

Associate Testimonials
Valerie Moore

ValerieAssistant Director of Homeownership Operations Military Spouse, Army Reserve

“Military spouses often make great, unseen sacrifices. Our families move frequently, so career opportunities can be limited. Virginia Housing’s support for military-affiliated associates includes providing meaningful and gainful employment opportunities where a military spouse like me can gain new friends and build valuable work family relationships.”

Bryan Camden

BryanMaintenance Supervisor
Veteran, Air Force

“No matter your military experience, veterans tend to find each other because of the molding process that we go through. It’s advantageous to have an employer that seeks veterans out, understands the value we bring and educates managers on how to utilize our skillsets.”

Caleb Hackett

CalebRisk Analyst
National Guard, U.S. Army

“Virginia Housing’s military and veteran program provides a support system and cultivates a sense of belonging for guardsmen like me. It allows for better networking and managerial support that empowers us to seek guidance and advice in our careers.”

Additional Resources

Beyond our efforts to support our military-affiliated employees, Virginia Housing offers the following military-specific resources to qualifying members of the public:

Military and Veteran Homebuyer Programs

Virginia Housing helps military service members, veterans and their families stay on track with the homebuying process and their housing finances. We connect you with education, grant assistance and Veterans Affairs (VA) guaranteed loans.

Granting Freedom Accessibility Grant

This grant is available for residences or rental units. Grant funds can be used to widen doorways and add ramps to make a home wheelchair accessible, to install grab bars or to make other recommendations by the VA.
